The first COMET (CoMaking the Einstein Telescope) subsidy was officially granted to REFLOW on July 9th during the consortium's kick-off meeting. The Dutch-German collaboration has received €75,000 to develop an innovative technology that enables ultra-precise signals to be transmitted via optical fiber. This innovation is essential for the future Einstein Telescope, which will measure gravitational waves with unprecedented precision and help scientists gain new insights into the origin and evolution of our universe.The Einstein Telescope will become one of Europe's most advanced scientific research facilities. Realizing the Einstein Telescope requires technological breakthroughs in fields such as photonics, vacuum systems, optics, cryogenic technology and advanced data processing. The Interreg VI program COMET supports this development by stimulating cross-border collaboration between companies and research organizations in the Netherlands and Germany through matchmaking, workshops and grant funding.The technologies being developed for the Einstein Telescope are not only highly valuable for fundamental scientific research, but also create opportunities for companies to develop new products, establish international partnerships and enter new markets. The knowledge and innovations resulting from these collaborations can also contribute to improved medical equipment, more efficient communication systems and new solutions to societal challenges such as the energy transition. REFLOW is the first project to receive support through COMET.&nbsp;<h1>Reliable signals over long distances</h1>To detect gravitational waves, every component of the Einstein Telescope must operate in perfect synchronization. Even the smallest disturbance in signal transmission can affect the accuracy of the measurements.Within the REFLOW project (Ultra-Low-Noise RF-over-Fiber System for LO Reference Distribution in the Einstein Telescope), partners Sabratha and Microwave Photonics GmbH will develop a system that distributes these reference signals via optical fiber instead of conventional copper cables. This approach enables signals to be transmitted over much greater distances with significantly lower signal loss and reduced noise. The result is a more stable and accurate system that can help achieve the exceptional measurement precision required for the Einstein Telescope. &nbsp;

The Einstein Telescope will be an underground research facility designed to detect gravitational waves with unprecedented precision. Gravitational waves are tiny ripples in space-time caused by extreme cosmic events, such as collisions between black holes or neutron stars.To detect these signals, the Einstein Telescope will use detector tunnels stretching several kilometres and located 250 to 300 metres underground. Laser beams will travel through these tunnels and normally cancel each other out perfectly. When a gravitational wave passes, it briefly changes the length of the detector arms. This disrupts the laser interference pattern, creating a measurable signal, the unique fingerprint of a gravitational wave.These measurements will help scientists better understand the origin of black holes, the evolution of galaxies and the first moments after the Big Bang. The Einstein Telescope will also provide new opportunities to further test Einstein's theory of relativity. Because the telescope must detect incredibly small changes, every component of the measurement system has to work together flawlessly. This is why new technologies, such as those being developed within the COMET project REFLOW, are so important. Europe is expected to decide on the location of the underground telescope in 2027. &nbsp;

How does the Einstein Telescope work?

<h1>Dutch and German expertise united</h1>REFLOW brings together the expertise of Sabratha from the Netherlands and Microwave Photonics GmbH from Germany. Microwave Photonics contributes specialist expertise in RF-over-fiber (RFoF) technology: the transmission of radio frequency signals via optical fiber. In addition to phase-stabilization, the company provides ultra-low-noise laser systems and photodiodes that ensure signals can be transmitted with maximum stability and minimal interference. This level of reliability is essential for the highly precise measurements that the Einstein Telescope will perform.Andreas Stöhr, founder &amp; CEO Microwave Photonics: “For Microwave Photonics this grant will foster our endeavor to innovate RF over fiber solutions towards distributing synchronized RF signals with excellent phase stability over long fiber spans.”Sabratha specializes in thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonic integrated circuits. This technology enables the development of highly efficient modulators - components that convert electrical signals into light. Thanks to their low power consumption and exceptional signal processing capabilities, these modulators are ideally suited for applications where precision is critical, such as the Einstein Telescope.Steven Ye, co-founder &amp; CTO Sabratha: “This grant represents an important milestone for Sabratha.
