<p><strong>For many SMEs, the Einstein Telescope may seem like a project reserved for universities, large research institutes or multinational technology companies. But according to Joris Brink, Project Manager at TCNN, that assumption often disappears after a single conversation. Once companies recognize how their expertise fits the technological challenges behind the telescope, they discover opportunities to improve their products, build cross-border partnerships and access future high-tech markets.</strong></p><p>Through the Interreg-funded project COMET (CoMaking the Einstein Telescope), companies and knowledge institutions in the Netherlands and Germany are discovering how their expertise can contribute to the Einstein Telescope, one of Europe's most ambitious scientific projects. The future underground observatory will detect gravitational waves with unprecedented sensitivity, unlocking new insights into the origins of our universe.</p><p>In this interview, we meet Joris Brink, Project Manager at TCNN (Technologie Centrum Noord-Nederland), one of the partners in COMET. Brink explains why innovation often starts with conversation, how COMET makes a complex scientific project accessible to regional SMEs and what is needed to turn scientific requirements into practical technologies and future market opportunities.</p><h2>Discovering opportunities&nbsp;</h2><p>At TCNN, Brink helps organizations turn ideas into collaborative innovation projects. Within COMET, he helps companies in the Northern Netherlands identify where their expertise can contribute to the Einstein Telescope and connects them with partners in the Netherlands and Germany.&nbsp;</p><p>“Sometimes the connection with the Einstein Telescope is immediately clear, but often it first requires a conversation to discover where a company’s knowledge could fit”, Brink explains. “For me, the important part is making a very large and complex scientific project accessible to regional companies.”</p><h2>Innovation starts with the right partners</h2><p>From a scientific perspective, there is already a clear understanding of what the Einstein Telescope must be capable of and which performance levels are required. The next challenge is converting those requirements into technological solutions that can be designed, manufactured, tested and implemented. That is not something one researcher, company or discipline can do alone.</p><blockquote><p>COMET helps to create a framework in which partners can turn scientific needs into realistic innovation projects.</p></blockquote><p>For Brink, that makes partnership building just as important as technology development itself. “In my view, one of the main challenges is therefore organizational: finding the right partners and bringing them together at the right moment. COMET helps to create those combinations and provides a framework in which partners can turn scientific needs into realistic innovation projects.”</p><p>By supporting matchmaking between Dutch and German organizations, COMET enables companies to move from an initial idea to a strong cross-border consortium capable of tackling highly complex technological challenges.&nbsp;</p><h2>Discovering expertise close to home</h2><p>Brink sees considerable potential in the Northern Netherlands. The region has specialized expertise in areas relevant to the Einstein Telescope, but companies do not always recognize how their everyday work connects to the project.&nbsp;</p><blockquote><p>After a conversation companies are recognizing elements that are closely connected to their dailty work and experience.</p></blockquote><p>“At the start of a conversation, some companies see the project as something very distant, highly academic or only accessible to larger technology firms. However, once we begin discussing concrete challenges, such as vibration control, precision manufacturing, cooling or sensor technology, that perception often changes. They start recognizing elements that are closely connected to their daily work and experience.”</p><p>That moment can be decisive. A scientific challenge suddenly becomes a technological question a company already understands, and may be equipped to solve, creating new collaborations and market opportunities.</p><h2>Stronger solutions through different perspectives</h2><p>Cross-border cooperation can require extra effort because of differences in language, culture or procedures, but Brink believes those differences can also lead to more creative and robust solutions. The same applies to collaboration across disciplines. Scientists, engineers, software experts and manufacturers each identify different risks and opportunities.</p><p>"It prevents partners from focusing too narrowly on their own area of expertise. By discussing ideas across disciplines, assumptions are challenged earlier and solutions can be improved before too much time or money is invested”, Brink continues. “That makes the development process more robust and increases the likelihood of producing technologies that are genuinely useful.”</p><h2>Beyond the Einstein Telescope</h2><p>Although COMET focuses on technologies for the Einstein Telescope, the innovations developed along the way are expected to benefit many other sectors. Advances in precision engineering, sensing, cooling technologies, vacuum systems and data processing could ultimately find applications in semiconductor manufacturing, healthcare, energy systems, and space technology.</p><p>For Brink, that broader impact makes the project especially rewarding. Companies strengthen their knowledge, expand their networks and create opportunities for future markets while contributing to a world-leading scientific infrastructure. As COMET continues to grow, Brink hopes even more SMEs will recognize that innovation does not always begin with a groundbreaking invention. Sometimes, it simply starts with discovering that the expertise you already have can make a difference, provided the right people come together.</p>
