If so, your knowledge could be relevant to the Einstein Telescope, a major European high-tech project. Through the Interreg project COMET, you can further develop your expertise together with a cross-border partner from Germany or the Netherlands. Funding of up to €75,000 is available.</strong></p><p>The Einstein Telescope will be a highly advanced underground observatory for detecting gravitational waves. Its development and construction require innovative solutions across a wide range of technology areas, including optics, laser interferometry, vacuum and cryogenic technology, active vibration damping and advanced data processing.</p><p>This creates opportunities for more companies than you might expect. Businesses that develop components, software, materials, measuring equipment or technical services may also have relevant expertise to contribute.</p><h2>From existing expertise to new applications</h2><p>The Interreg project COMET supports SMEs and research institutions in the German-Dutch border region in developing technological solutions for the Einstein Telescope. They receive support in assessing their project idea, finding a suitable cross-border partner and preparing their funding application.</p><p>The innovation must address a technological challenge related to the Einstein Telescope, but it may also be valuable for other applications and markets. Participating in COMET therefore offers companies more than funding alone. It provides access to new knowledge, technology partners and international networks. This can help businesses advance their technology, identify new applications and connect with potential customers.</p><p>After all, technology developed for one market may also offer a solution to a challenge in another sector. A company does not need to be active in science or already involved in major research projects. It starts by exploring whether its existing knowledge, technology or production capacity could be applied in a different way.</p><h2>Emsland GmbH makes the connection</h2><p>Emsland GmbH is the economic development agency for the Emsland district and one of the COMET partners. Project engineer Stefanie Schulte and her colleague Markus Mebben help companies turn initial ideas into concrete projects and find suitable partners. “We believe in a practical approach that reflects the actual needs of businesses,” says Schulte.</p><blockquote><p>These conversations show me why it is so important to bring companies together at an early stage.</p></blockquote><p>Emsland GmbH also raises awareness of COMET across the region and informs companies about the opportunities the project offers. Mebben explains that conversations where companies suddenly realize that their knowledge and expertise could be relevant to the Einstein Telescope are particularly interesting. “Often, it does not take much, but simply someone to make the connection. These conversations show me why it is so important to bring companies together at an early stage.”</p><h2>New partners, customers and markets</h2><p>The technological challenges of the Einstein Telescope are too large and diverse for a single company or discipline to address. COMET therefore connects companies and research institutions with complementary expertise. This enables them to combine knowledge, develop innovations together and gain access to each other’s networks.“A project of this scale requires a wide range of expertise. The border already plays only a minor role in the day-to-day activities of many businesses. COMET expands this network and opens the door to new technology partners, research institutions and potential customers.</p><p>This cooperation can also provide a gateway to other markets. A solution developed within COMET for vibration damping or data processing, for example, may later prove valuable in sectors such as semiconductors, medical technology or aerospace. In this way, companies not only contribute to the Einstein Telescope but also strengthen their own capacity for innovation and market potential.&nbsp;</p><h2>Preparing today for tomorrow’s opportunities</h2><p>“The better informed companies are and the sooner they start exploring the subject, the greater their chances of making an active contribution later,” says Schulte. “We are laying the foundations for that today.”</p><p>Mebben adds: “We want to ensure that companies have this topic on their radar and do not discover later that they have missed an interesting opportunity.
