The development of the Einstein Telescope received a major boost at the end of April. The Dutch government announced an additional investment of 25 million euros and designated bringing the telescope to the tri-border region as a government priority. According to Minister of Education, Culture, and Science Rianne Letschert, this region, where the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany meet, is the ideal location. That same week, at Hannover Messe 2026, it became clear just how large and powerful the Einstein Telescope ecosystem already is, and what opportunities still lie ahead for companies.With the Einstein Telescope, researchers will be able to measure gravitational waves using laser beams through an underground system of kilometers-long tubes, thereby gaining new insights into the origin of the universe. The telescope is still under development, and in addition to the tri-border area—also known as the Einstein Telescope Euregio Meuse-Rhine (ET–EMR)—other European regions are in the running, such as the Italian island of Sardinia. During Hannover Messe, one of the world’s largest industrial trade fairs, the Einstein Telescope ecosystem literally came to life. At the joint ET-EMR booth, governments, research institutions, and companies demonstrated how they are collaborating on this groundbreaking project.At the stand’s opening, Minister Letschert reflected on three years of intensive collaboration. At the same time, she emphasized that the coming period will be crucial for the telescope’s realization. Together with, among others, German Federal Minister of Education and Research Dorothee Bär, the importance of international cooperation was reaffirmed. &nbsp;

From policy priority to practice on the trading floor

A key theme at the trade show was the role of companies within the Einstein Telescope ecosystem. Various projects, such as ET-CRISTAL, ECRYR, and BEAMPIPES4ET, demonstrated how researchers and companies are working together to tackle complex technological challenges. This collaboration revolves around open innovation. Companies contribute their specialized expertise, while new applications and market opportunities emerge.Interest from the business community is visibly growing. International delegations and companies from Germany and Flanders, among others, visited the booth, seeking to connect with the rapidly developing ecosystem surrounding the Einstein Telescope.

For companies looking to get involved, the Interreg project COMET (Comaking The Einstein Telescope) plays a key role. By bringing together SMEs and research institutions in the Dutch-German border region into international consortia, COMET promotes the design, testing, and scaling up of smart solutions to the technological challenges surrounding this future observatory.&nbsp;During the trade fair, active discussions were held at the joint NRW-NL-B booth with companies from the Netherlands and Germany that can contribute to technological solutions for the Einstein Telescope.&nbsp;According to Svea Binder, project manager at TAFH Münster and involved in COMET, the opportunities are closer than many entrepreneurs realize. “I noticed that many companies already possess knowledge and technology that are directly relevant to the Einstein Telescope. I also see a growing willingness to collaborate across borders.”Binder emphasizes that the project contributes to innovation in the region and a strong economic ecosystem. “The Einstein Telescope offers companies the opportunity to accelerate innovation and build new partnerships. Moreover, the technologies developed are often more broadly applicable, which in turn leads to new business opportunities in other sectors.”<blockquote>Developed technologies are often applicable in a broader context.</blockquote>Concrete examples of these innovation opportunities were also visible on the exhibition floor: “I spoke with several companies working with AI. That technology can, for example, be used to automate processes related to the Einstein Telescope, such as analyzing mirror surfaces and detecting defects.”
